Do Listen Read: January 2016

It’s my first Do Listen Read post for 2016! Woo-hoo!

DO

– I’ve been exploring these Buddha Bowl recipes on Fit Food Finds. By “exploring” I mean I haven’t made any of them yet, but I’m flirting with the idea.

LISTEN

– Channel 13 on Sirius is now for great voices. It’s called the “Velvet” station, and I’m loving it!

– I’m back into Josh Groban. I know, I just can’t get “with it,” but I’m not sorry.

– The Adele episode of carpool Karaoke with James Corden is all over the web and deservedly so. It’s pure joy.

READ

– I’m on a memoir kick. Currently I’m reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi on my iPhone while in the carpool pickup line. I’m reading Between Gods by Alison Pick before bed at night, and I’m listening to Carrie Brownstein’s Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl while driving around town.

– My two recent favorite fiction reads were The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz and And Again by Jessica Chiarella.

– Writers! You have to read “How to Keep Writing When No One Gives a Shit” by Jennifer Garam. I think we all feel this way at least once . . . an hour.

  1. Oooo – buddha bowls. They sound great! I will totally consider potentially making myself some. I love memoirs, and it’s been a while since I read some (since I read any, really), I will hopefully get to the library and check some of those out.

I recently read a couple of Finnish children’s (maybe? They seemed a bit adult sometimes) stories. Tales from Moominvalley and Finn Family Moomintroll. They were ridiculous, ludicrous and delightful. By Tove Jansson.

  2. I’ve been listening to channel 14, “Coffee House,” but will check out Velvet. I verified that my address did transfer from MailChimp to Tiny Letters – good job! And I am off to read the letter about people not giving a…

  3. This past season of the The Voice was the first time I really ever watched that show, and the winner reminded always of Josh Groban. They both have incredible voices. I definitely am going to put a hold on And Again at the library based on your GNB recommendation. You certainly didn’t steer me wrong with Mosquitoland! Love your DLR posts.

  4. Oh, I can’t wait for your tiny letter!! You are so inspiring. I am now, finally, after a year of this blog, getting ready to figure out what the heck to do for a newsletter. I’m currently listening to a great podcast on DIY MFA all about it (episode 78) which is super helpful. Maybe tiny letter is in my future as I’m already on mail chimp.

Love your suggestions here, though I’m sorry to say I can’t get on board with the Groban, I don’t begrudge you his music 🙂 I LOVED the post about writing when no one gives a shit and will be bookmarking that. And I agree that the Inky Path has some awesome classes coming up, especially Christine’s!

  5. I’m signing up for your newsletter now.

I have been making lots of vegan recipes from the Eat to Live cookbook and I feel so good!! 🙂

Of course with a carnivore Frenchman as a husband, it’s not permanent, but I might try to mix in more vegan recipes.

  6. I’m not a Josh Groban fan myself but you never know!
My sister swears by Buddha bowls and she’s a master health foodie.
I constantly write and wonder if anyone cares, so Jennifer’s post fascinated me.

  7. Josh Groban. 💜 I love these posts because it is a great way to feel like we’re chatting as friends! I have my “currently” post set to go up in a few, too!
The newsletter looks great. Although you have to tell the story now of the letter your mom wrote. Intrigued!

    1. I am one of your older admirers with a young attitude.
Your advice is right on, and at my age, I am still searching for someone who has advice with confidence, wisdom and a one liner that remains as a lesson from which to learn.
      You have it all.
      Your listen.
      Digest.
      And then advise.
Always with humility. You bring it on home to me…
      Thank you.
      Yours,
      Sue-Sue

  9. Love your new letter format! I enjoyed the first installment and look forward to more.
The Buddha bowls look delicious. It’s a full blizzard all day — the perfect time to check out the recipes.

  10. I unapologetically love Josh Groban, too. Also enjoyed your newsletter and The Hired Girl. Going to check out your nonfiction picks – I struggle with those, and you always have good options!

  11. I didn’t get your newsletter but never fear I resubscribed and hopefully I will! DO tell my about the Breath Becomes Air book – REALLY want to read that one!
