Talking About God During Purim
I rarely talk about God in any of my essays or short stories. This is a little unusual considering I’ve had 30 essays total published at The Jewish Daily Forward, Kveller (a Jewish site focused on parenting), and tcjewfolk.com. And although my short stories tend to feature Jewish characters, talk of God is never at the forefront except for one of my more recent ones in the Israeli journal Ilanot Review.
This is why I was originally sheepish, but then excited, to direct you to my newest essay at Kveller called “Purim and My Awkward Use of the G-Word.” It’s what I consider the most religious/spiritual/honest article about my Judaism that I’ve ever published. I haven’t written anything with much Jewish content since Hanukkah so I figured it was time to dip into that well again.
How does this whole talking about God or not issue relate to the holiday of Purim? You will have to come to Kveller to see. And you’ll also learn why I’m so awkward when it comes to talking about God in the first place. Jewish or not—I think anyone involved with any religion (or purposely NOT involved, actually) will relate in some way.
Happy Purim to all who celebrate!
