Do Listen Read: Nightstand Edition

DO

– Come to my challah baking class if you live in the Twin Cities! I will have more dates toChallah in Edina Magazine with Nina Badzin share soon. My co-leader, Tzipporah Leah Kalatsky, and I were featured in a gallery spread in Edina Magazine. We have held 14 classes in my kitchen since September 2014. That is A LOT of challah! We’ve added babka to the mix as well.

LISTEN

– I updated the page on my site linking to the podcasts of the radio segments I’m doing with Jordana Green on WCCO (CBS) on Wednesday nights. Last night’s show was especially fun!

READ

– My post last week about “byline chasing fatigue” and a general “meh” feelings about the internet is still going strong. That one really struck a nerve, I guess! I have savored every comment because the conversation has been so satisfying. And my post begot a thought-provoking response from Lindsey Mead on her blog. Read hers and the comments there, too!

– I loved Cheryl Strayed Facebook post about “the scorching holier-than-thou/you’re-for-or-against me positioning so many of us perform on social media . . . ” I have been guilty of that, I’m sure. Her entire (it’s short) status update deserves to be read.

– Dan Kois wrote about Clickhole for Slate. His entire piece does a nice job of explaining the changing face of the internet and how a site like Clickhole (started by writers from The Onion) was inevitable. It was time for a smart group of writers to take on the kind of stuff that goes viral these days, the way that The Onion took on the print news media in a new and refreshing way when it first came on the scene.

  1. I loved Girl on a Train and the Tidying up book:). I just finished Cheryl Strayed Dear Sugar book – loved it. Love her FB status – very wise indeed.

  2. I love your Do Listen Read posts. Also loved your piece that spurred my own thinking about what I’m going to do – and BE – as a writer. As you know I’m reading Everything you Ever Wanted by Jillian Lauren and up next is Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts. Off to read the Cheryl Strayed post now. xoxox

  3. I’m reading The Girl on the Train right now. About 1/3 into the book and really enjoying it. So far I like this better than Gone Girl (to which it has been compared) because I feel the characters are more likeable. I’m rooting for them–at least right now. That wasn’t the case for me with Gone Girl.

I’m very curious to hear your take on Sloane Crosley’s novel. I loved her essay collections.

  4. I listened to The Girl on the Train, but I haven’t read any of the others on your nightstand. My Kindle is full, in preparation for travel and summer: Among the Ten Thousand Things by Julia Pierpont, The Book of Speculation by Erika Swyler, The Immortal Life of Greta Wells by Andrew Sean Greer, and Every Day by David Levithan. I have a few not yet published books on hold at the library too. And now you’ve given me some more…

  5. Loved all this Nina! So many people have told me to watch odd woman out, I’m looking forward to it! I just finished The Vacationers by Emma Straub and loved it! I did laugh put loud a lot so beware when reading in bed. 🙂 loved what you said about meeting blogging friends! In addition to meeting Allie as well, I met two other women I’d met through HerStories Project classes. So great! Looking forward to and we can connect during one of your visits to HP. xo
