In the summer of 2015, Julie Burton and I talked about putting together a weekly writing group that people would pay to join. We called it a writing “studio” because we wanted people of all levels to come and experiment and “play” with their writing. Of course we both felt vulnerable as we each put up posts on Facebook seeing if there was any local interest. Both of us were entrenched in the online writing worlds, but we craved local connections. We craved faces and voices around a table and the accountability that comes along with showing up in person week after week.
Not only did that first Thursday afternoon group fill up, but the women who registered then are still with us today as we begin our fall session this week. Four full years later! Since no spots opened for writers who were hearing about the group and wanted IN, we opened up a Tuesday morning session three years ago, which I now lead alone while Julie is very busy running her gorgeous co-working space where we moved our groups in 2018.
What makes our groups so special is almost indescribable, but I’m glad that Julie tried in her post on the ModernWell blog. Click the picture below to read more.
