2020 Nanowrimo Support Group

Hello Nanowrimo buddies!

I set up my 2020 Nanowrimo support group. We had a great time writing “together” the last few years. Newbies are always welcome! Fiction and nonfiction writers are both welcome! (I’m doing nonfiction this year.) Like last year, the group will dissolve in early December.

Why nonfiction this time? I don’t seem to have the attention span for fiction these days. Am I the only one? Although I’m still reading tons, I am leaning harder into nonfiction. I’ve started and stopped reading so many novels this year. I’m thinking it’s the 2020 curse of all the things. So, if I can’t sustain reading much fiction, I don’t think that churning out 50,000 words of it in one month is going to go so well either. It doesn’t matter to me that the original intent of nanowrimo was for fiction. Writers all over the globe use the nanowrimo energy of November to get all kinds of writing projects started or finished. My point–don’t like the “novel” in National Novel Writing Month hold you back if, like me, you’re not feeing the fiction vibes.

How does the FB group work? There are no rules, per se. The point is to report in at the end of the day to say you got your stuff done. I will start a thread each day for that purpose.

You can join me on Facebook in this group for some cheerleading along the way.

Still needing inspiration without leaving your house? (Thanks, pandemic.) I love to browse Barnes & Noble and other online bookstores to glance at recent titles and see what’s current in the marketplace. It’s not that you should worry too much about current trends. The key is to read the short descriptions to remind yourself of two essential elements to a big writing project like this–character and purpose. For nonfiction writers, you still need a “character” for the reader to follow even if that character is you. And that character needs something to do from page to page. DOING is important–not just thinking. Our reading minds crave action and change in a story, even a true story.

I hope you’ll join me!
