Friday Friendship Roundup #4

Friendship Articles, Episodes and More

It’s the Friday Friendship roundup! I see so many friendship-related things throughout the week, either because I find them myself or people send them to me. I’m going to keep sharing them on my site twice a month.

Podcast News!

I’m making plans for new episodes of Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendship. If you have an anonymous question you’d like me to cover, that form is here. It is TRULY anonymous. You don’t need to provide an email address.
You can make the suggestion in the form of a comment rather than a question if that’s easier. Meaning, I don’t always center an episode on an actual question. Sometimes I do general topics like I did in #12 “Helping a friend in a crisis.”

Articles About Friendship I’ve Loved

  • Ilana Wiles had a great take on the first episode of “And Just Like That” (the horribly titled Sex & the City sequel). Her piece, “I’m Glad Samantha Ghosted Carrie and I’m Glad About The Other Too,” had some excellent thoughts about friendship breakups and how friendships naturally evolve as we get older.

  • The late Oliver Sacks wrote an op-ed for the NYT in 2015 about his terminal cancer diagnosis. Titled “My Own Life” it is worth reading every word. I especially liked this:

On the contrary, I feel intensely alive, and I want and hope in the time that remains to deepen my friendships, to say farewell to those I love, to write more, to travel if I have the strength, to achieve new levels of understanding and insight. . . This will involve audacity, clarity and plain speaking; trying to straighten my accounts with the world.

  • Another good one from the NYT in 2015, “How to be a Friend in Deed.”  This one is about how to help a friend during a hard time as opposed to saying “What can I do to help?” My guest Alissa Butterfass and I covered similar ground in episode #12 of Dear Nina.

  • My friend Pam Moore wrote a great article for the Washington Post about loneliness after move and making friends in general. Pam was my guest on episode #3 of Dear Nina. We talked about “the friend who never initiates contact.”

  • And as always, I share articles on my Facebook page and in my Dear Nina Facebook group.
